Knee osteoarthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced confidence with walking, stairs or exercise. The first step is to confirm whether osteoarthritis is the main cause of symptoms and identify modifiable factors that can improve function.
What Assessment Includes
Dr Carlos Tahuil-Ochoa — Specialist General Practitioner reviews the symptom pattern, medical history, previous treatment, imaging and goals, then performs a focused knee and lower-limb examination. Sudden locking, marked instability, trauma, fever, severe swelling or other concerning features may require a different pathway.
Management Without a Procedure
Education, appropriate activity, strengthening, load modification and management of relevant general-health factors form the foundation of care. Osteopathic rehabilitation may be coordinated with Kristopher or Jai.
Weight-Management Pathway
When excess body weight is contributing to knee load or overall health risk, Carlos can discuss an optional evidence-based pathway. The discussion should be respectful, individualised and separate from any implication that pain is simply caused by weight.
Imaging and Procedures
X-ray is often the most useful first-line imaging when confirmation is needed. Ultrasound or MRI has a more selective role. A procedure may be considered after assessment, but outcomes vary and rehabilitation remains important.

Do I need an MRI for knee osteoarthritis?
Usually not. Plain X-rays and clinical assessment are often sufficient. MRI is reserved for specific questions.
Can knee osteoarthritis improve without surgery?
